Position profile


Intermodal Heavy Duty Mechanics perform major and minor repairs, overhauls and servicing on all types of vehicles, vehicle attachments and material handling equipment. For more information about the position please click here: http://jobs.cn.ca/en/intermodal.sn

Critical performance areas include the following:

· Inspect service and maintain Cranes, Tractors, Light trucks, Chassis, Material Handling Equipment in accordance with federal and company requirements and industry standards, including changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts.

· Diagnose diesel /gas engines, electrical, hydraulic, driveline malfunctions and make required repairs.

· Use electric and oxy-acetylene welding equipment, lubrication equipment. Test/Operate Tools/Machinery in a safe and effective manner.

· Use measuring devices and understanding visual displays.

· Inspect all equipment to be repaired for testing and movement to and from shop in yard and shop.

· Operate all equipment to be repaired for testing and movement to and from shop.

· Install engines.

· Prepare inspection, maintenance, and work reports, and record details on prescribed forms in accordance with established procedures.

Working Conditions:

· Ability to work irregular shifts, including evenings, midnights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime.

· Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, performing overhead work, lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds (22 kg).

· Shop environment, ability to work inside shop and outside shop in all weather conditions.

· Must be able to work at heights up to 60 feet.

· Comply with safe work procedures and policies.

Employment Requirements:

· High School diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED).

· Diesel mechanic, Automotive, Truck & Coach, Hydraulics experience.

· Valid G driver's license.

· Valid Heavy Duty Mechanic provincial certificate. Automotive Licenses 310S & 310T, journeyman or other class of license with minimum 2 years of related work experience.

· Ability to certify company equipment in accordance with provincial standards OR become certified to do so.

· Good hand-eye coordination.

· Possess your own tools sufficient to perform repairs and service on small equipment. Tools specific to the railway are supplied by the company.


· Experience in troubleshooting hydraulic and electronic systems.

· Welding skills.

· Basic computer skills.


Successful candidates will receive paid on-the-job training on new products and updates as required by the company, both theoretical and practical instructions.

Depending on your level of experience, candidates must have completed 2nd year and registered with trade branch for 3rd year and will attend a series of courses at your work location in Canada or away from your work area for training purposes. Training will include intermodal equipment components, control systems, air brakes, start up, basic diesel electric systems and CN maintenance regulations. Truck motors, data recorders, as well as fuel, oil, water and air systems will also be covered. Successful completion of this program is essential for performance of future duties.
