Position profile

The responsibility of the role of the Information Domain Architect (IDA) is to enable and support the company's use of information as a strategic enabler of corporate goals and objectives. The IDA will achieve this by assisting in the design, development, implementation and evolution of information capabilities in order to improve the consistency, timeliness, quality, re-use, security and delivery of data. This newly established position is an excellent opportunity for goal-oriented individuals who are eager to deliver value to CN and to further evolve this role by engaging with other architects and IT teams to establish a framework for maximizing the continuing value delivered by investments made in information systems, with a focus on our information assets. This position works hand in hand with our Enterprise Information Architects, Business & Domain Architects and Solution Architects to provide leadership, guidance, and support in the evolution of CN's information capabilities & architectures while preserving and enhancing the value of our information assets.


•Understand and communicate the full range of capabilities, needs, constraints, issues/challenges and strategies of specific information domain(s)/discipline(s)
•Assess domain health/risk (in detail) and propose investment focus to address domain issues/opportunities
•Drive/assist (develop and maintain ) in the creation of the domain strategy & supporting road map(s)
•Understand and articulate how information capabilities can help achieve business strategy
•Determine the proper applicability of the domain's capabilities/defining the best possible architecture for using the domain's capabilities
•Analyze external trends for advances/change within their domain scope and determine need for revisions to domain capabilities, standards & guidelines
•Based on business/solution requirements, perform evaluation/assessment and determine need for new/revised/replacement capabilities within domain
•Assist in the development and delivery of long-term strategic goals for information architecture vision and standards in conjunction with architects, IT teams, data users, business clients and other key stakeholders; provide guidance to tactical solutions to improve alignment to long-term objectives and overall information management roadmap
•Maintain and evolve domain information processes, standards and models and related material and reflective of current initiatives
•Oversee mapping of data sources, data movement and interfaces with the goal of ensuring data quality, awareness, visibility and re-use
•Understand and articulate how CN's information capabilities can help achieve business strategy
•Support other architecture team members and project delivery teams with their knowledge of the enterprise information assets during solution design and delivery

Key Deliverables:

•Domain policies, governance, standards and guidelines; position & decision papers
•Information usage profiling and related metrics
•Domain capability models, inventories
•Domain health/risk assessments
•Domain strategy, road maps
•Current & future state overviews

Desired skill set profile:

•Proven experience with information management, information architecture, Master Data Management and project management methodologies; experience within a transportation service organization is an asset.
•Proven experience in creating information architecture for either Business Intelligence, Portal (Internet and Intranet) or Service Oriented Architecture based solutions
•Expertise in Information Modelling (data, dimensional, object/entities)
•Hands-on experience with any of Data Warehouse, Business Warehouse or Data Mart design and build experience, on-line transactional processing (OLTP) systems and on-line analytical processing (OLAP) database implementations.
•Direct experience with enterprise data management processes and procedures
•Strong understanding of relational and dimensional data structures, theories, principles and practices; exposure to and experience with emerging data/information trends such as big data is an asset
•Political agility - tactful, resolute and committed in providing excellent customer service
•Proven influencer and communicator with stakeholders at various levels; Ability to present ideas in user-friendly and business language – both verbally and in presentation form
•Ability to work and develop partnerships effectively with colleagues, managers and stakeholders in a variety of situations
•Focused on continuous improvement, and able to anticipate future circumstances
•Ability to understand and balance the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations
•Knowledge of applicable architectural frameworks and tools (i.e. SOA, ERwin data modeling tool, etc.) is a definite asset
