Position profile

Job Summary:

Supervisor of Communications will oversee a regional territory made up of as many as 20 unionized employees. They have regional responsibility for all Communications maintenance and installation programs, inspection activities, and management of critical voice and data systems. Job has responsibility for the reliability of new, and existing communications systems. Installation, repair and maintenance of radio equipment and RTC control equipment in accordance with approved railway standards, specifications, procedures, budget, and the CN operating plan. They manage multiple operating and capital projects with related work processes, equipment, and S&C resources, to comply with safe working procedures and practices, maximizing asset utilization and controlling costs.

Duties:

Ensure reliability of new and existing communications systems. Procure

material, tools, and equipment to maintain and repair all systems on territory

Supply and manage resources and expertise required to deliver communications solutions to operating problems.

Develop and implement initiatives to achieve short and long term objectives for

operating budget reduction.

Develop and implement strategies and processes to meet internal customer operating requirements for improved services while minimizing costs and optimizing asset utilization.

Plan and manage workforce, equipment, and materials to meet project commitments within the assigned duration and with minimum effect on operations.

Prepare capital program requirements, and ensure projects are delivered on time and within budgetary constraints.

Build safety compliance and improve safety results through regular efficiency testing and safety walkabouts; provides positive and constructive feedback and coaching.

Lead the on-boarding and training activities of new employees.

Manage budget, workforce productivity, manpower, within CN policy and five guiding principles.

Manage territory and implement changes to reduce telecommunications failures, and improve the operation of the entire plant.

Plan, implement, and manage Capital projects to ensure the quality of the plant.

Working Conditions:

Maybe required to work on varying shifts to cover operations that run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Work is primarily indoors but may have periods of outdoor work in varying types of weather.

Work shifts may vary and will include weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays.

Will be on call based on territory requirements.

Moderate travel requirements (up to 25% of the time), which may include overnight stays away from home based on territory requirements.

Will be required to respond to emergency situations.

Employment Requirements:

High school diploma or GED.

Two years of college or technical school with a focus on electrical or electronic technology.

Valid driver's license.

A minimum of 3 years experience with communications systems or equivalent.

USOR Qualified

Extensive working knowledge of and communications systems infrastructure and related safety appliances, S&C project management. railway S&C standards, specifications and procedures.

Good computer skills; especially working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word), SRS.

Preferred:

Bachelor's degree Electrical Engineering or comparable degree.

Experience working with SAP.
