Business Transformation and Solutions

We work with our various business colleagues to ensure that IT activities are aligned with strategic business objectives and lead to higher levels of value. In other words, we turn good ideas into innovative solutions. We oversee business opportunities from the idea stage to the delivery of the solution, and work with our colleagues to prepare business strategies and optimize processes.

Solution Delivery and Lifecycle Management

While we prefer to have a standard approach for the delivery of our solutions, we understand that every project is unique. To make sure the product is delivered in the optimal way we leverage different development methodologies such as Waterfall, Agile, and Scrum. A typical IT project team for a large-scale project includes a project manager, business analyst, solution architect, designers, developers, a change management specialist, and testers. While these are the primary roles for most projects, we provide a number of other services to projects—including functional design, infrastructure integration, and application integration.

Application Development and Support

Every minute of every day, thousands of employees access CN information systems to make decisions, complete transactions, and keep customer shipments moving. With a tried and true solution delivery life cycle in place, we ensure that the new solutions or enhancements to existing applications we develop are not only robust but also user friendly and easily maintainable. We have a number of processes and controls in place to ensure the high-availability of our systems and applications and a quick restoration plan in case unplanned outages occur. 

Infrastructure and Telecommunications Operations

When technology is the heartbeat of a company’s operations like it is for CN, it is crucial to have a strong organization in place to support all the systems and networks and operate them securely and with minimum outages. Our IT operations group is comprised of several teams offering a wide array of services, ranging from systems and software support, to telecommunications engineering and 24/7 infrastructure and network monitoring services.

Information Security

CN’s IT group works hard to ensure that CN stays secure and well connected. They protect everything from our rail traffic control and level crossing operations to business information and email. Ensuring that it remains safe and secure is the role of our Corporate Information Security Unit (CISU) who, by monitoring vulnerabilities and investigating incidents, diligently provides solutions to protect CN’s information and systems.
