Prince George, BC

Prince George is the largest city in northern British Columbia, and is the "Northern Capital" of BC.  Situated at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers, and the crossroads of Highway 16 and Highway 97, the city is the service and supply hub for one of the fastest-growing regions in Canada and plays an important role in the province's economy and culture.



Home to approximately 77,000 residents and the age average is 36 years old.



Cool humid continental climate, encompassing winters that are milder than what the latitude and elevation may suggest.  However, arctic air masses can settle over the city for weeks at a time. 

Prince George shares the same time with the province during the summer and is one hour ahead during the winter.  Because of its northerly latitude, residents experience long daylight hours in the summer.

Education - Daycare centers, Schools and College

Over 20 daycare centers available.

State-of-the-art education is provided through School District #57 Prince George with 40 elementary schools, eight secondary schools, and eight private schools, as well as one elementary and one secondary francophone schools.  Post-secondary education options:  University of Northern BC, College of New Caledonia and numerous trade schools. Several BC universities, British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and the Open Learning Agency have integrated their local programs with CNC. 

The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) is the second-newest university to be built in Canada in over 25 years. A total of 55 undergraduate programs, 15 masters programs and two PhD programs are now offered at UNBC, as well as the new Northern Medical Program.


Health Care

Prince George is home to the regional hospital and referral centre for Northern BC, most recently ground was broke for the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North. Also located in the city, the Northern Health Authority employs 6,000 physicians, nurses, administrators and other health care professionals and manages the care of 300,000 people within its territories. 


Sports and Leisure

Sports:  Two soccer fields, ice rinks, indoor pool, 280 meter long walking track, golf courses, etc.

Cross-country skiing, year-round outdoor activities.  Backcountry, cat and heli skiing:  one hour drive. Snowmobile:  just up the mountains.  Cross-country skiing – 50 areas.

Leisure:  Live theatres, symphonies, art galleries, museums and libraries.  Hunting, fishing, hiking trail, and camping.

A variety of ethnic and cultural associations thrive in Prince George, including the Multicultural Heritage Society and Le Cercle des canadiens francais.
