Peace River, AB

Peace River is a town in northwestern Alberta, situated along the banks of the Peace River. It is located 486 kms northwest of Edmonton.  

 

Population

In 2011, the population was near 7,000 residents.  The age average of the population is 32.  There are various First Nation, French-Canadian and Mennonite and Hutterite German-Canadian farming communities.


Climate

The Peace River area is generally characterized with low year-round precipitation. Its dry climate, which results in reduced humidity, causes the summer heat and winter cold feel less severe than in places with higher humidity.  Due to Peace River's northerly latitude, the summer brings close to 18 hours of daylight where winter gives less than seven hours.  Regardless of the season, Peace River will usually have sunny skies with an average of 2,060 hours of sunshine every year.

Education - Daycare centers, Schools and College

There are four daycare centers.  


The Peace River School Division operates eighteen public schools and two outreach campuses in the area:  four elementary schools, catholic education up to Grade 12, and francophone Peace River Adventist Junior Academy is another separate school in town.  Post-secondary education is offered at Northern Lakes College Peace River Campus and its program selection includes trades training in carpentry, electrical, welding and crane and hoisting equipment operator. 

 

Health Care

The Peace River area is served by the Peace River Community Health Centre. Other hospitals in the area are located in Grimshaw, Manning and McLennan. Peace River Mental Health provides psychiatric care. When very specialized care is required, patients are transferred to Edmonton via air ambulance. Drop-in health needs are catered for at the Associate Medical Clinic. There are dental and chiropractic clinics, as well as optometrists in the town.

 

Sports and Leisure 

The Peace River area has competitive sports including hockey, baseball, Tae Kwon Do, curling, soccer and boxing.  Recreational leagues for a wide range of skills and ages hold their games in the evenings and weekends, and include sports such as tennis, soccer, squash, volleyball, softball, curling, basketball, and ice hockey.  Summer recreational activities include swimming, hunting, fishing, water slides, hiking, biking, and roller blading. In the winter, tobogganing, snowmobiling, and both downhill and cross-country skiing are favourite activities at Misery Mountain, and nearby trails and parks.  There are three 9-hole and one 18-hole golf courses.
