Edson, AB

Edson is a town in west central Alberta and is a two-hour drive west of Edmonton and five hours from Calgary.  The 1980s saw the development of spruce mills and forest industries, the city’s major employers. Edson lies in the McLeod River valley, immediately east of the Canadian Rockies foothills.

 

Population

In 2012, the population was over 8 500 residents. The age average of the population is 34.  

 

Climate

Edson has a humid continental climate with relatively low year-round precipitation. Its dry climate, which results in reduced humidity, causes the summer heat and winter cold feel less severe than in places with higher humidity. Typically, summer lasts from late June until early September, and the humidity is seldom uncomfortably high. Winter lasts from November to March, and varies greatly in length and severity. Spring and autumn are both short and highly variable.

 

Housing

Apartment: One bedroom starting at $675 and two bedrooms starting at $775 monthly.

Housing: Three-level condo starting at $160K and four bedrooms and 2 bathrooms starting at $330K.

 

Education - School

Edson is part of the Grande Yellowhead Public School Division, sub-division 2.  There are seven schools from Kindergarten to grade 12, including French immersion. There are also two private schools, one from K to grade 6 and the other from K to grade 12.

 

Health Care

The Edson Healthcare Centre is a combined acute and continuing care facility. Some of the services provided include pharmacy, diabetic nephropathy, rehabilitation and X-Ray.

 

 

Sports and Leisure

The Edson Leisure Centre features twin arenas, and indoor swimming pool with waterslide, and a hospitality room.  Swimming lessons are available all year. The town has an extensive series of walking trails. The Edson and District Recreation Complex houses the curling club, banquet and meeting facilities, and the Golf Club Pro Shop. There is one 18-hole golf course in Edson and two others in the area. The Skateboard/BMX Track is located across from Centennial Park. Vision Park is one of the world’s largest Ball diamond facilities with 24 regulation sized diamonds in one park. Summer recreational activities include hunting, fishing, and in the winter, tobogganing, snowmobiling, and both downhill and cross-country skiing.
